Want
to improve team cohesion? Why and How?
The strength and breadth of interpersonal connections among a group's members is referred to as team cohesion. Members are more likely to participate and stay motivated to achieve the established goals because of this interpersonal tie. Not only group goals are attained when a team is cohesive, but everyone feels like they contributed to the group's overall success. Individuals on a cohesive team are more driven to work toward the team goal and focus on the complete group rather than themselves (LEE, 2022).
What makes a team cohesive, and how can team leaders assist their members in succeeding?
Four
stages in team development Forming, Storming, Norming and performing can be
used to assess a team’s cohesiveness and leaders and team members can
understand why certain behaviors are happening and make informed changes.
Figure 1 : Teams maturity model
A
well-coordinated team is capable of completing its purpose or mission. A team's
cohesiveness is left to chance without a leader who is setting the vision,
offering role clarity, recognizing each other's abilities, and settling
disputes. That's because ensuring team cohesion at each stage of the trip
necessitates deliberate effort on the part of the team leader
1. Cast a team vision and remind it to the team often
Team
leader should cast a vision to give team the sense that, “Why it is important to
do this task?” and what will be made possible by doing it?
2. Make everyone's accountabilities and
responsibilities known
Individuals
must believe that they are "in it together" and that everyone on the
team is carrying their fair share of the load. Team leaders, may help by
outlining each team member's accountabilities and responsibilities and then
communicating them with the rest of the team. As a result, the group develops a
sense of reliability, which is one of the hallmarks of a high-performing team.
3. Tap into team member's diverse
strengths
Its
well worth the time and effort to identify the individual capabilities of the team
members and explain to the rest of the group why having them would help
everyone reach the team goal.
4. Mediate conflicts without avoiding them
Conflict
is bound to develop on a team of people who are deeply invested and engaged.
While you might think of workplace conflict as a terrible thing (and it can be
if left unchecked), managed disagreement can provide opportunities for critical
thinking, innovation, and creativity.
Not
to mention that it may assist you in identifying hurdles to team cohesion that
might otherwise go unnoticed. Remember, as a team leader, it's up to you to
decide if the potential benefits of resolving a problem through mediation
outweigh the costs of resolving it promptly and effectively.
Even
when things become rough and obstacles to success arise, it takes an effective
team leader to ensure that a team works cohesively. By establishing a vision,
sharing responsibility and accountability, using individual capabilities, and
resolving disagreement, leaders can ensure that the team stays together until
the finish
Conclusion : Team cohesion mainly relies on leadership.
