It’s a New Era for Mental Health at Work

Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It has an impact on the way employees think and feel and also influences how they deal with stress, interact with others, and make decisions.

Risks factors to mental health

Risks can be tied to job content, such as duties that are inappropriate for a person's skills or a heavy and unremitting workload and in circumstances where there is a lack of team cohesion or social support.

Bullying and psychological harassment (sometimes known as "mobbing") are two prominent sources of work-related stress that pose health concerns to employees. They've been linked to both psychological and physical issues.  Further below are few more courses for work related stress,

  • Inadequate health and safety policies.
  • Poor communication and management practices;
  • Low levels of support for employees.
  • Inflexible working hours.
  • Unclear tasks or organizational objectives.

Poor mental health and stress can negatively affect employee,

  1. Job performance and productivity.
  2. Engagement with one’s work.
  3. Communication with coworkers.
  4. Physical capability and daily functioning.
Mental illnesses such as depression are associated with higher rates of disability and unemployment.

How to create a healthy working place?

  1. Protect mental health by reducing work–related risk factors.
  2. Cultural change.
  3. Implement deeper connection channels
  4. Promote mental health by developing the positive aspects of work and the strengths of employees.
  5. Address mental health problems regardless of cause.

Employers benefit from supporting mental health at work.

Employers who have helped their staff cope with the pandemic, racial inequities, return-to-work planning, and/or mental health in general had greater mental health and engagement. Workers who felt supported in their mental health overall, for example, were 26% less likely to report at least one mental health symptom in the previous year. Respondents who felt supported by their company were also less likely to suffer from mental health symptoms, to underperform and leave work, and to feel comfortable discussing their mental health at work. They also expressed a higher level of job satisfaction and a desire to remain with their employer. Finally, they had more positive feelings about their firm and its leaders, such as trusting them and being proud of them (Harvard Business, 2019).

  4. Physical and mental health issues, harmful use of narcotics or alcohol, absenteeism, and lost productivity can all result from a toxic workplace.
